Work with RHI Magnesita – The driving force of the refractory industry

Leigh Kinninmont

Our Engineering & Manufacturing team are working closely with RHI Magnesita on some roles in their busy Bonnybridge plant.

RHI Magnesita and Nine Twenty Manufacturing

RHI Magnesita is the Global leader in refractories and have the largest number of locations around the world, with 35 main production sites and 70 sales offices globally. They ship to 180 countries around the world, and are proud of their innovative range of over 120,000 different products.

With around 14,000 employees worldwide, RHI Magnesita pride themselves on their approach to people, and are particularly proud of their apprenticeship schemes which take in 450 apprentices each year from local communities. They take leadership seriously and believe that “leadership is not just about being the biggest or the strongest. To us, it’s about using those advantages to set the pace of innovation in our industry.”

We recently met with Craig Robertson, Plant Manager at Bonnybridge and his HR Manager Sheila Donnelly to discuss the changes they’re making at the site and the opportunities for potential candidates.

The Bonnybridge site has been operating since 1978, and with around 115 employees it produces over 140,000 pieces per year. They are currently seeking a Process Improvement Manager which is a newly created role, and also a Supply Chain Manager due to an internal promotion.

Sheila, can you tell us more about the supply chain role?

“Yes, our current supply chain manager is moving internally to another plant in Europe and this has left us with an opening for a Supply Chain Manager who will be responsible for plant purchasing and contract negotiations, utilising our systems, planning and scheduling the optimum capacity of plant equipment, warehouse management, inventory management and also managing a small team.
We’re looking for someone who can drive their department with autonomy, analyse data to see how we can continually improve and be a strong and motivational manager for the team.  There is a real opportunity to develop our processes and we strongly encourage new ideas.”

That sounds like a great opportunity, which brings us onto the next role which is a Process Improvement Manager. Craig, can you tell us more about this role?

“RHI Magnesita are huge on Continuous Improvement and LEAN and have created this position for someone to purely focus on the Bonnybridge plant on process improvement and process control.  There is a group wide strategy and objectives and projects to work from, but we need a proactive individual who can drive their own improvement projects. This person must be a strong communicator and be able to help people understand what they should be doing differently and more importantly, why they should be doing it.
As this is a new role, this person has a real opportunity to make their mark on the site and can really develop in the position. We have employees on site with qualifications in LEAN and Six Sigma to help support, and we already have an ethos of Continuous Improvement for this person to develop.”
