A Day in the Life of a Software Engineer at C2 Software

Nine Twenty Technology spent some time with Jamie MacDonald, a Senior Software Engineer at C2 Software, to find out about his career journey so far…

Everyone meet Jamie!

Tell us about how you found C2 Software and why you joined?

I started with C2 about 4 years ago and it was actually Nine Twenty who approached me about the job when I was working for a similar company.  At the time there was a vacancy for a Senior Software Engineer and I was working for bespoke software company. I knew of C2 before I was approached but once I learned more about the company it seemed like a good fit.

What was your working and educational background before C2 Software?

Well I worked in a few jobs after I left school before I decided to go to university where I studied European Politics. After that I did a diploma at St Andrews University where I received a distinction in IT. After that, I worked as an IT Officer for a few public sector organisations as part of Government projects with St Andrews University and Dundee University. From there I went onto become a Software Engineer.

What can you tell us about your role as a Senior Software Engineer at C2?

Generally, every day is different, one day you have specific project-related work to do but other things pop up. For the most part I work on websites or CRM systems and I help find solutions for our customers who are based all over the UK.  Part of the role is to provide support to existing customers, our 1st line support will be first point of contact for our customers and then I will provide specialist support when needed. Sometimes I will have to troubleshoot to find a suitable solution alone or I might work with other departments to find the right solution. This means I can either give guidance to other departments to manage a fix or I can action myself depending on the situation.  I largely work on .NET projects but I also have experience working with PHP and JavaScript depending on client requirements.

What do you like the most about C2 as an employer?

It is definitely a nice environment in which to work; at the moment we have one extended software team which works well. Everyone has their own day to day responsibilities but we all have the same shared goal which helps us get the work done. The role is really varied and because each customer is different and our solutions are often bespoke in nature, I am able to use different techniques in work. Also there is no micromanagement here which is important to me; I get good freedom to write my own code.  Overall, C2 is definitely a place I would recommend to tech professionals looking for a new career opportunity on the East coast.
