SmartSTEMs is a dynamic and growing charity dedicated to inspiring young people into STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) across the UK. We collaborate with industry and education in our work to support the next generation of scientists, engineers, and tech innovators through various programs, workshops, and outreach initiatives.

Role Purpose: The Head of Operations will be responsible for ensuring the efficient and effective management of the charity’s operational functions. This includes overseeing the day-to-day operations, managing resources, and implementing strategies to support the charity's mission and objectives. The successful candidate will be a strategic thinker with excellent organizational skills and a passion for educational advancement in STEM.

Key Responsibilities:

Operational Management:

  • Oversee the daily operations of the charity, ensuring processes and systems are efficient and effective.
  • Develop and implement operational policies and procedures to improve overall organizational performance.
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant legislation and regulations.

Financial Management:

  • Work with the finance team to develop and manage the charity’s budget.
  • Monitor financial performance and ensure financial sustainability.
  • Oversee financial reporting and auditing processes.

Human Resources Management:

  • Manage the HR function, including recruitment, training, development, and performance management of staff.
  • Foster a positive and productive working environment.
  • Ensure compliance with employment laws and regulations.

IT and Systems Management:

  • Oversee the IT function, ensuring that technology supports the charity’s operations and strategic goals.
  • Implement and manage information systems to support operational efficiency.

Strategic Planning and Development:

  • Collaborate with the CEO and senior leadership team to develop and implement the charity’s strategic plan.
  • Identify and implement opportunities for operational improvements and innovation including system design.
  • Support fundraising and donor engagement activities.

Stakeholder Engagement:

  • Build and maintain strong relationships with key stakeholders, including donors, partners, and volunteers.
  • Represent the charity at external events and meetings as required.

Risk Management:

  • Identify and manage operational risks.
  • Develop and implement risk mitigation strategies.

 

Person Specification:

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Management, or relevant experience in a related field (essential)
  • Master’s degree in a related field or professional qualifications (desirable).

Experience:

  • Proven experience in an operational management role, preferably within the charity or education sector.
  • Experience in financial management and budget oversight.
  • Experience in human resources management.
  • Experience in strategic planning and execution.
