A Rare Opportunity at Loch Lomond Group – Distillery Manager, Alexandria - By Karen Stewart
As promised, I wanted to share a little about my recent visit to Loch Lomond Group’s Alexandria Distillery, where I met with Stuart Cairns, Head Of Distillation, to discuss an exciting new opportunity.
My team and I have partnered with Loch Lomond Group for many years, and it’s been a privilege to watch them transform, grow, and evolve into the business they are today. What I admire most is how they continue to invest in people – many of the candidates we’ve placed have gone on to develop their careers within the business, stepping into new roles and leadership positions. Every time I visit the site, I’m reminded of the welcoming culture they’ve built, and this trip was no different.

It was great catching up with Stuart, who we placed into the business some time ago, and hearing about his progress and achievements. We spoke in detail about their rare and exciting search for a new Distillery Manager to lead the Alexandria site – a role created following the retirement of their long-standing manager, Derek.
This is a unique opportunity to take the reins of an experienced and passionate team, guiding them into new ways of working while continuing to build on the site’s success. Alexandria is a technically impressive plant, producing both malt and grain whisky, with a combined capacity of around 25 million litres per annum. The scale and complexity of the operation mean the role calls for a dynamic leader – someone who understands how a distillery operates, enjoys being hands-on when needed, but also thrives on shaping strategy and driving continuous improvement across people, processes, and performance.
The ideal candidate will be a natural coach, able to foster problem-solving across the plant, and equally confident leading a site tour as they are delivering operational excellence. It’s a varied, fast-paced role – the perfect fit for someone who’s passionate about whisky and motivated to take Alexandria to the next level.
As Stuart put it: “Loch Lomond Group is a smaller company that does big things – and does them quickly.” That energy, agility, and innovation is what makes this opportunity so special. Distillery Manager roles like this, especially in the Central Belt, rarely come around – and the potential to make an impact here is huge.
