GCU Career Mentoring

Leigh Kinninmont

One of our very own, Rachael Baxter, Head of Delivery for Technology at Nine Twenty Recruitment is committing her time to mentor a Glasgow Caledonian University final year student. Rachael will guide and mentor her student, Thelma Dansule, giving her invaluable advice, guidance and industry support.

What is the Career Mentoring about?

The aim of the Glasgow Caledonian University (GCU) Career Mentoring is to give mentees an opportunity to gain an insight into their preferred employment sector, develop employability skills and personal networks through the help of a mentor. When matching mentees with mentors, the university look at areas of study, professional experience and broader mentee needs such as CV writing, confidence-building and interview skills to make the best possible match.

Rachael will mentor Thelma for a period of 6 months, which starts this month and will end in August. During the 6 months, Rachael will cover a number of things with Thelma.

About Thelma

Thelma is a final year student studying Cyber Security and Networks. IT was originally not where she thought she would study, Thelma never carried out IT at school but was given the opportunity at college and fell in love with it.

What does Thelma want to achieve from the GCU Career Mentoring programme?

  • Open a platform and network

  • Be shown the opportunities

  • Information is key at this stage of her career journey

  • Use the mentors network

What will be covered over the 6 months?

It will be important for them to get to know each other and set boundaries for their time together, such as commitments and general rules. This will give experience to the student to attend meetings on time and act professional, as they would at work.

Rachael will need to find out exactly what goals Thelma wants to achieve by the end of the mentoring progress. They will discuss how they plan to achieve and measure these goals, what help Rachael can provide to help to Thelma, to meet her goals and any areas for development or obstacles that might be in the way.

Understanding and identifying Thelma's skills, strengths and weaknesses is another area Rachael will cover. Once Rachael has identified these, she will be able help develop areas that need improved and highlight any areas of skill that stand out with Thelma. Rachael will provide her amazing expertise in recruitment and knowledge within her industry to provide Thelma with the best help possible for areas such as CV help, interview prep, overview of the market and network introductions.

There will be regular check ins for progress between Rachael and Thelma over the 6 months, with it coming to an end for them both in August where they will both be able to reflect.

Good Luck!

We have no doubt that Rachael is the perfect match for Thelma, giving all her experience and effort in the recruitment industry, her student is in great hands! With Rachael being a graduate of GCU herself, she will fully understand how to help Thelma as much as possible with resources and guidance as she has been in the same boat!

Nine Twenty Recruitment is delighted to be working with students to build on their employability skills, we hope that Rachael's hard work with Thelma will place her through to employment.

We wish Rachael and Thelma the best of luck, we know that this will be a mutually rewarding experience for both Rachael and Thelma.
